Miki Berenyi Trio – Doldrum Days
Miki Berenyi knows about the spaces between places. The former Lush frontwoman’s new track, “Doldrum Days,” with her trio, finds beauty in boredom and danger in drift. Over six and a half minutes, fluttering vocals float above dreamy guitars and burbling synths.
Oliver Cherer explains the concept: being lost, stranded, unmotivated, and bored—potentially fertile or dangerous territory. The scenario borrows from Erskine Childers’ novel “The Riddle of the Sands,” but really it’s about liminal spaces where interesting things happen when you’re not trying to make them happen.
Berenyi collaborates with KJ “Moose” McKillop and Cherer for this richly layered dream pop that confronts environmental collapse, digital solipsism, and blunted machismo, while still allowing in optimism. The lyrics don’t shy from midnight parenting anxieties or the ache of loss, but they don’t surrender laughter either.
Martin Andersen’s video complements the song’s hallucinatory quality with fish imagery and a mysterious hand that is missing fingers. It’s psychedelic without being precious, much like the best shoegaze has always been.
Unfortunately, this marks the trio’s final North American tour. Rising costs have made overseas touring impossible for smaller bands. Moose is even breaking his no-fly rule for these dates. They’ll include Lush tracks as a farewell to longtime fans—a generous last hurrah from one of the ’90s’ most recognizable voices.
